Indigenous Revelations
"People go through every moment of their lives... without thinking about Native peoples or american colonialism for one second. And, frustratingly, our society and education system has deemed that perfectly fine.” This blog is dedicated to north 'american' Indigenous culture, struggle and identity. It serves as a tool to not only celebrate these cultures and people, but also to combat the continuous cycle of ignorance, racism and cultural genocide against Native peoples.Phillip Deere, AIM Spiritual Leader (1979)
Not much has changed since Deere’s time. Watch this documentary to learn, remind yourself what it means to be Indigenous and/or to understand the importance of Indigenous solidarity.
A few highlights:
Spiritual Foundations, the Post-Colonial Experience and Political Activism
“Without Indian spiritual foundations, no organizations will ever accomplish anything. In fact, without spiritual basis it will all crumble.”
“The government has spent billions and billions of dollars… trying to make an Indian whom he is not…there is nothing wrong with [our religions, even though our religions] have been put down by education, christian teachings.”
Effects of Colonization and the Disruption of Indigenous lifestyles
Tribal Government:Practicing Whiteman’s law (6:15)
Forced Assimilation, Colonial Amnesia, Deculturation, Acculturation (7:15)
On Food and the Colonized Diet (7:35)
“We have become so confused that we do not know what we are eating. All the instant food on our shelves, we read the ingredients…what educated man knows what that means but we’re eating it. We are so far removed from the natural way of life that we don’t know what we’re eating or drinking.”
“Many of our Indian people are not themselves and so they’re so unhappy.” (8:55)
“Another man brought his value system here.” (9:40)
The Mighty Wind: Caught in Two Cultures (9:50)
“Non-indians who want to be indians” (10:45, 11:04)
“We find non-indians who want to be indians go back on the reservation and practice the Indian way of life. And many of them getting carried away on the idea of the Indian…we see many of them wearing an eagle feather on his back and better beadwork than I have. We find our people wearing something like beadwork just to show he is indian, but there is something more to it than beads and feathers. There is something valuable in that way of life. (12:04) Perhaps it is an error to say the indian way of life for it is really a human being way of life, but it so happens that the Native people have preserved that way of life.”
The Sacred Hoop: Drums and Round Dance, Nature and Circles (12:30)
“I can take my drum all over the world and recognize it as a drum. Why? because they too at one time had a drum…when we talk about the circle as the sacred hoop, that circle had a meaning to all at one time…so where did they lose their drum? their human way of life?”
